Why are excellent organisations different? Read about Mary’s PhD thesis. Mary has always been interested in the relationship between HR and the performance of an organisation. She researched five London councils in depth to see how excellent councils implemented their HR practices compared with councils that were judged to be performing less well. Although the local government context is different from the private sector the similarities are striking. Mary suggests her main research finding, that high performing councils implement their human resource practices in a more strategic and systematic way, is relevant across all sectors. Her research provides new insights into the contemporary local government arena and her findings will be of interest to any organisation seeking improved performance with reduced resources.
