'Looking at things one way - or another'

Been thinking a lot about Erving Goffman's work on framing and reframing....how we see the world....Yesterday taking the rubbish out for the dustbin men's weekly visitation, got talking with our neighbours and was told about some friends of theirs in Cyprus. An expat couple they had sold up to come home to Britain....the proceeds of the sale of their house went into the bank the day before the haircut on bank deposits was announced and deposits frozen. They've lost a lot money, money that they were going to use to buy a house back here. Their whole future is now highly problematic.
It's that kind of story that makes you want to hold on very tightly and count your blessings. But there was an interesting article in 'The Independent' about the Cypriot levy on savings....after all, with low or negative interest rates on people's savings here....doesn't that almost amount to the same kind of levy? There's more, as "The Independent' pointed out....the 25% devaluation of the pound that we only really notice when we go abroad. While we're being so cheerful, let's carry this on a bit and think of how pension ages have been pushed back, for example, from 60 to 63 to 66 and when next? Over 70? Over 75? As Goffman would say, it all depends on how we see our world....take a different stance and things can become very different...
