Universities together ?

Sunday, 24 March 2013 16:55

Been talking with some pals about what seems to be going on in local universities. Old colleagues in one university are worried about what a neighbouring university is doing and the possible impact on them. The neighbour has advertised recently over twenty new jobs in the same field. Now that's a hellva investment in terms of salaries and other costs - and is, incidentally, a complete reversal in market strategy. Until recently the idea was that the neighbour would diversify into other areas.

But now it appears to be concentrating on a particular area.....and if other schools in the same field of surrounding universities joined the party, just think of the economies of scale! Could it be possibly be that government wants such concentrations of expertise and cost and is encouraging the universities to go down such a route? It's being presented as organisational strategy rather than governmental policy so it's less easy for union opposition to be focused....Whatever the details, clearly something is going on in the HE sector.....It would seem that so much in the public sector (the NHS is a well-established example) is now outside the framework of democratic decision-making and accountability....the long-term consequences of this could be very serious.....
