Time flying

Very much occupied with this new being-a-grandmother thing. Time is indeed just flying. Have been trying to get a positive perspective on the future….after all, it’s what Lily (aged four days) deserves. Have spent some time in the recent past reading about positive psychology (Martin Seligman et al) in a determined effort to ‘look on the bright side’.
But that doesn’t come easily (or unforced) when you come from the Corporal Fraser ‘We’re all doomed’ tendency. So very interested to hear about Julie Norem, a psychologist at Wellesley College, who talks about defensive pessimism as ‘a practical, proven strategy’ that allow its users to cope with the ‘anxieties and pressures of modern life.’ So, let’s be real but let’s get things done – and move on!

Julie K.Norem (2002) The Positive Power of Negative Thinking: Using defensive pessimism to harness anxiety and perform at your peak’ New York: Basic Books

Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (2000): ‘Positive Psychology: an introduction’ American Psychologist 55 (1): 5-14
