The American statistician Nate Silver has been getting a lot of coverage, most recently in the current edition of ‘The New Yorker’ and last Sunday’s ‘Observer’. He’s the guy that predicted a ‘comfortable’ win for Barack Obama in the American presidential elections while most commentators were humming and harring about a very close result. I’ve got hold of his book ‘The Signal and the Noise: the art and science of prediction’ which is high on ‘The New York Times’ bestseller list. On Friday (23 November), a new series of ‘More or Less’ is starting on BBC Radio4 at 4.30pm. This is the programme that decodes and explains the statistics in the news.
